Statement attributable to Erina Early, NT Branch Secretary, United Voice:
Yesterday the Union, the Commissioner for Corrections and the Minister met to discuss the current impasse with the Correctional Officers enterprise agreement and the pending protected industrial action for Friday and Monday – correctional officer walk offs.
After robust discussions, the Government and the Union have agreed to wording in the proposed enterprise agreement which ensures that correctional officers have a say on their safety.
This is a huge win for our correctional officer members. They have stood united throughout the long enterprise agreement negotiations and finally we have the result we were seeking.
Safety of correctional officers was the paramount claim in these enterprise agreement negotiations. It was not about money – it was all about safety of officers, safety of prisoners and the safety of the community.
Correctional officers had no other choice to walk off the job until their safety concerns were addressed and the Government has delivered on the demand from our members.
